Single Speed, wooden style

Courtesy of TreeHugger.

ISPO is the International Sports Expo, held in Germany twice a year. It’s where many of the up and coming trends are first spotted. The Waldmeister (literally Forest Master) bike by Marcus Wallmeyer scored a win in their current ‘BrandNew’ jury selection. It is handmade from about 100 thin layers of wood. The design is obviously unique but we’re told the ride also offers unprecedented comfort. Seems like the designer of the JANO plywood Dual bike was on the the right track after all. Another pic, after the jump, of the Waldmeister in all its glory. It seems not to contain a single piece of Shimano componentry, instead employing other top notch hardware. Dirty Dog Rotors Update; Reaper Skull Stem

Dirty Dog Dragon Rotors Front Fork

I’ve put in about 30 miles riding on the Dirty Dog (Dragon) rotors (yeah, it’s been a slow month) and I wanted to check in with my thoughts on them.

They look so trick, it’s ridiculous. Just about everyone I’ve shown them to has commented about great they look. I have to agree with that assessment as well. The Dragon rotors look very cool. On top of that, nearly everyone has also mentioned how they’d like to get them for their own rig.

Of course, the question on everyone’s mind is, how do they perform? So far, exactly like my original Avid Roundagon rotors. Currently they’re being stopped by my BB7s and I haven’t noticed a single bit of performance difference between my old rotor and this new rotor. They stop me just as well as my roundagons and haven’t overheated on any long descents.

I’ll be putting more miles on these and will continue to update you on them. They are definitely the best looking rotors out there and if they continue to perform this well, I don’t see why anyone would have any qualms about getting them for their own bike.

Dirty Dog MTB has an update on their Reaper Skull Stem:

June 8th Update: While we were shaving 50 grams off of the stem, it inadvertently caused the shipment date to us back 2 weeks. We are going to have the stems shipped to us on the 15th. That will take a few days to get here (Made in Taiwan), and then we’ll start shipping to our ever so patient distributors. So you wait another couple of weeks, and you shave 50 grams off of your stem. The new weight is ~569 grams. Thanks again for your patience. We are doing no more modifications, and the first big production run is machining away. This has been an incredible engineering challenge, but the final product is incredible!

For those of you who don’t remember the Reaper Skull Stem from Sea Otter, here’s a couple of pictures:

Chainless Mountain Bike

I’ve seen this company a while back but what really caught my attention was their Full Suspension Chainless Mountain Bike.

Here’s the specs on the FS.

ALL NEW DESIGN FOR 2007! Experience exhilarating riding in comfort and style. With the Outback’s full-suspension frame design, Shimano 8-speed premium gearing and rugged components, it is a unique blend of style and performance.

This recreational full-suspension mountain bike was made to navigate mountain trails and urban paths with increased comfort and control. The Outback’s aluminum frame offers a nimble, responsive ride, while its Velo plush seat and full-suspension design make those long rides incredibly comfortable and enjoyable. With a high torque rating and a wide gear range, the Shimano Inter-8 Premium (identifiable by its red stripe) is our smoothest, most rugged and most versatile gearing. The planetary gears are cold forged and heat treated to take long term abuse, and the hub internals are designed to handle inputs that would exceed what could be exerted by most any rider. The Outback’s 8-speeds offer a gear range comparable to 20 gears on a 24-gear chain bike, including some climbing gears for lots of off-road fun. With the tough, aluminum enclosed shaft drive and all-internal gearing, this bike also offers 13″ of ground clearance and the durability to take crashes that would otherwise cripple fully exposed chains and derailleurs. In short, this bike is ideal for anyone who enjoys the feel of a full-suspension mountain biking without the hassles of greasy, maintenance-prone chains and derailleurs.

If your looking for a bike that is as much fun tackling mountain trails as it is urban streets, nothing compares to the rugged reliability of the Outback.

What’s a matter, cat go your toungue?

I’m noticing that our traffic to the site is growing and a fast rate. But funny thing is only a handful of people make comments on the site.

But if you go to our commuter site, BikeCommuters.com, you’ll find more people commenting on things even though the site traffic is considerably less.

Is it because bike commuters are more out spoken, or are ya afraid we’d make fun of you? What ever your reason is, just drop your 2 cents and let us know what you’re thinking!

We promise not to make fun of you….at least not too much!

It’s disgusting!

Jeremy found out a while back that I shave my legs…and then he starts shaking his head and says “That’s DISGUSTING!”

I say…”So? What’s the big deal?” I then turned to one of the guys at the LBS I work at and asked him if he shaved his legs…and he said yes. During this whole time Jeremy was still shaking his head in disapproval.

I say so what…I do shave my legs. I did it a few years ago when I raced, but I kinda just like how it felt and looked, so I kept shaving. Besides when I tried to let my hairs grow back, I felt super slow. I know I know, it’s probably all in my head…

But think about it, your leg hairs are just like pubes! I mean, why would you want your pubes all up and down your legs…that’s nasty!

I say shave, wax or Nair them! Besides, it makes your calves look bigger!

KHS Tandemania Alite

I recently got this awesome KHS Tandemania Alite. It’s comes with a rigid fork which will soon be upgraded to 100mm Marzocchi fork and the wheels will get pampered with a set of off road tires.

Priscilla felt that the rear flat bar was too low, so I changed them out to a beach cruiser bar and installed a pair of glittery jelly grips!

Dirt Rag’s Demo Tour Finder

For those of you interested in demoing some bikes this summer season you should definitely check out Dirt Rag’s Demo Tour Finder. Dirt Rag has linked each manufacturer’s tour information to this one webpage. What a great idea. Here’s what they have to say:

Ride it before you buy it. That’s sage advice for anyone that’s shopping for a new bike. A great place to start is with your local bicycle shop, as many dealers offer you the opportunity to throw a leg over bikes to get a feel for how they ride.

It gets even better when the manufacturer’s demo fleet rolls into a nearby trailhead and you get the opportunity to test a slew of bikes back-to-back on technical trails. To that end, we’ve collected the following information to help you track down the demo tours, so you can get yer mitts on the latest mountain bikes. Don’t forget your helmet, shoes (and pedals if you have a preference) and drivers license (some demos also require a credit card as security, so pack one if you got one).

Purple Extreme: Test in Progress

We’ve had this lube for a few months and have had the chance to test it out on a number of bikes we have. Bike that include mountain, road, fixed and kids bike. Heck even door hinges have benefited from this lube.

So here’s a preview of what the review will look like…..

In the application of a mountain biking lube, Purple Extreme, though it states on the bottle, “400 miles between applications“, we found that the lube will last no more than 20-30 miles per application in the So. Cal trail conditions that include dry and dusty trails. However, in road applications, I’ve used this lube on my fixed gear bike a few months ago and have yet to reapply it. It has been at least 350 miles since my last Purple Extreme treatment on my Redline 925.

You can read the rest of the review by the end of the week. So stay tuned.
