Tuesday Brews Day: Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale

Posted by RL Policar On November - 19 - 2007

I already had one of Samuel Smith’s Brews on here a while back. Alright, I’m already in the lazy Thanksgiving mode and coming back to the same brewer, sue me. But if there’s any excuse it’s how good this brown ale is. I happened upon this one in Parker’s Lighthouse In Long Beach, Ca.

This is the first Samuel Smith’s beer I’d tasted and hooked me in easily. It’s simple and, yup you guessed it, tastes nutty. What nut? I don’t know exactly but it sure is delicious. Stop thinking what you’re thinking. This one reminds me there’s genius in simplicity. It’s mellow and soothing and just tastes amazing from start to finish.

And for the upcoming holiday this goes perfect with a bowl of mash potatoes and some cranberry sauce. So when you’re making a run for the sparkling cider and pumpking pie and you see the Nut Brown Ale staring you in the eyes, you’ll know what to do. Consider yourself debriefed. Be ready to buy two bottles if need be and good luck my beer drinking companions!

Thursday Tech Tip: How to make a truing stand

Posted by RL Policar On November - 19 - 2007

Yes I know its not even close to Thursday. Given that it is Turkey Day this Thursday, I doubted that most of you will be visiting the site since you’ll be enjoying the effects of tryptophan.

So here’s my latest How To. I’ll be showing you how to build your own truing stand with an old Thule wheel mount.

The first thing to do was to measure points on the mount where the exact rim positioning would be for 26″, 700c and 29er wheels. Once I had it marked, I drilled a few holes on both sides.

I then inserted some 2″ long screws into the hole. This was for the 26″ wheel. I placed nuts on both sides of the screw to make sure I can get it tight and adjusted.

You’ll notice that I have one screw of the mount in place. I put that there to prevent it from moving. I used a C-clamp to hold the stand. I would have used both screws, but I wanted the option to remove the stand if I wasn’t using it.

You can see that it will fit front and rear wheels in either 26″ or 700c.

700c wheel. A 29er wheel would have fit, but I didn’t have one handy in my garage. Notice the second set of screws on the stand. That’s for the larger wheels.

This stand has to be the cheapest option I have in getting a truing stand. Minoura makes a home mechanic stand for about $45-50…not a bad deal. But I had this wheel rack sitting in the garage unused, so I basically didn’t spend anything and it only took me about 10 minutes to build.

Now if I can just get my truing skills honed…

Bike Ridin’ Brothers

Posted by RL Policar On November - 19 - 2007

This past weekend Randy drove in from Yuma Az to celebrate our family’s early Thanksgiving Dinner. So on Sunday we decided to hit a small portion of the Fullerton Loop. Of course I brought the camera to document our adventures. Check it out!

Priscilla’s Birthday Bikes N’ Breakfast Bash

Posted by RL Policar On November - 19 - 2007

This past Saturday MtnBikeRiders.com celebrated Priscilla’s birthday by taking a “relaxed vibe” ride at the Fullerton Loop and capping it off with some grub at Farmer Boys.

We’re fortunate enough that Sports Photographer, Khoa Nguyen was able to join us this weekend and helped us out by taking some great shots of the ride as well as photo we’ll be using for our Holiday Greeting Cards.

Here’s a few of the photos we’re considering for the greeting card. Tell us what you think.

Randy is in town…

Posted by RL Policar On November - 17 - 2007

Rather than having to go to multiple locations on Turkey Day, my family opted to meet this weekend to celebrate Thanksgiving. So Randy, along with his wife Soraya and kids drove in from Yuma, Az. last night.

Having forgotten his portable bar, we rode the bikes down to 7-11 to get some life essentials…beer for the grown ups and milk for the kids!

Being the light weight that I am, my half drunken beer was already too much for me, but not for Randy. If you were to prick his veins, Jim Beam would flow freely.

Here he is calling me a little girl…

Here’s another shot of him quenching his thirst…

Though I enjoy beer, I just can’t hang with a Pro like Randy. Perhaps I’ll stick to Diet Cokes instead…
