KHS is sending us a new test bike to umm… test.

Here’s a hint of it:

I can tell you that the bike’s name is based off the name of a city in the AZ but it’s not Glendale where Super Bowl XLII is being held at University of Phoenix Stadium. Hmm… am I allowed to say Super Bowl?

Back to the bike. As you can see from the picture its got a Horst bearing rear linkage, a Rock Shox Monarch shock for 3.5 inches of travel and a flat black finish. If you peruse KHS’s site, I’m sure you’ll find our next 29er test bike real quick.

Thursday Tech Tip: Cold Weather Clothing on a Budget

Posted by RL Policar On January - 31 - 2008

I’m one of those guys that don’t necessarily believe in buying cycling specific cold weather clothing. Heck, just use what you’ve got and save some money.

So here’s how my cold weather clothing works. I take a long sleeve base layer that I bought from Walmart ($8). This is similar to UnderArmor, but at a fraction of the cost. I then take a cotton Tshirt and wear it over the base.

That current set up will keep me warm in temperatures around 50 degrees. The base layer wicks moisture away from my skin, but the cotton T doesn’t let too much cold air hit my body. Keeps me nice and comfy.

If the temperature is around 35-40 degrees, then I throw on an exercise jacket that I got from Old Navy for $12.

The jacket isn’t too thick to where it would over heat me. The material on it is woven pretty loosely, so that means enough air can reach my body…but not too much. I found that the trick that makes all this work would be the cotton t shirt. I’m not a fan of biking jerseys, well for one, I hate how they fit, plus jerseys are too light to wear. They are designed to let air and moister pass, which make them terrible for cold days. But I digress, use a cheap base layer from wally word, a cotton t and possibly a light jacket and you’re set! This tip just saved you some dough! Heck cycling jackets can cost up to $100! Dang, go use that money and take your wife out to dinner or something….

The MtnBikeRiders Mobile Was Hit!

Posted by RL Policar On January - 31 - 2008

On my way home from work, I got rear ended. Right after he hit my car, I signaled for the other driver to pull over so we can exchange information.

Then the knuckle head takes off! As soon as he does that I get on the phone with 911 explaining to them what just happened. I was pretty pissed and knew that this guy didn’t have insurance and that’s why he bolted. So I gave chase!

He tried to speed up, but since he was driving a beat up 80′s Dodge Caravan with wood siding…plus his radiator was damaged, I can tell because of all the fluids coming out of the front end of his car. However, my little Hyundai was pretty quick and I caught up to him. He then gets on the 55 South. I try to follow him, but he kept weaving in and out of traffic as if he’s trying to lose me.

This is a similar style of van that hit me, but all beat up.

He then exits Dyer West, then makes a right on Grand. While he’s on Grand Ave. I’m still on the phone with 911 trying to give them his license plate info. Then the idiot is trying to lose me as if he’s in the TV show Dukes of Hazard by swerving left and right and THEN, he SLAMS on his brakes! Trying to get me to ram into him. But as soon as he hit his brakes, that got me close enough to get a look at his plates. I give the 911 guy the info, I’m hurting from the impact, I tell the guy that I’m going to back off because now we’re entering a bad part of Santa Ana, you never know if he’s going to do something stupid. I pull off into a parking lot, wait for the California Highway Patrol to show up. I then asses the damages. First I check myself out, my back is wicked sore. I call Priscilla to let her know what just happened. I was till amped up on adrenalin, so I’m sure I sounded like a mad man.

I check out my car, and see that this douche bag did some damage. On this photo, you can tell that my trunk/hatch on the right side has a bigger gap than on the left.

On the middle of the bumper you can tell where his license plate had hit me. Underneath the tail light you can see some damage.

Here’s my bumper.

I’m no auto collision expert nor a Claims Adjuster, but guessing from what I can see, there might be more damage underneath the car bumper cover, which could explain the misaligned trunk/hatch. I’m just pretty lucky that I’m ok. The car is fine…ofcourse it is! It’s a Hyundai! But my back is pretty sore this morning, but nothing that a few Motrins can’t fix…temporarily.

Playing Hooky

Posted by Moe Ramirez On January - 30 - 2008

So today I came down with some strange fever…. Snow fever! With over 2 feet of fresh snow in our local Mountains, I couldn’t resist the calling… So I took a personal day off and hit the mountains, snowboarding style!

So what does this have to do with Mountain Biking? Well, there’s a mountain involved…. there’s a downhill… speed… crashes… and FUN! Sort of like Mountain biking! My little bro and I had a blast riding today, we did over 7 top to bottom runs and everyone came home safe. Good Times!
