The owners of MtnBikeRiders.com and BikeCommuters.com have recently sold the rights to all five of the sites they own to Evomo Clothing for an undisclosed amount. When asked why Moe Ramirez and RL Policar had sold out, they simply said, “It was about F#$%^ing Time! We’ve wanted to do this for so long!â€? “We worked our butts off to make sure that we got noticed and bought out quickly,” stated Ramirez. Policar said, ” I’m glad I don’t have to put up with the staff any more – geez, it was like trying to babysit little kids after a night of drinking…excruciating!”

Ramirez and Policar were asked about the amount that they were paid for their brands, but refused to give concise answers to the question. Rather, Policar had said, “Just think about it this way, I don’t have to work until the end of the year! The temporary tattoos and gift certificates to my favorite restaurant, Hometown Buffet made it all worth it!” Ramirez stated that he plans on taking his family on a long vacation to Catalina Island with the money he made. “What?! Its not like I can afford to take them to Hawaii or Fiji! You kidding! No way Jose, I am taking them there because I had to make sure that I put a big deposit down on a new Hummer H2.”

The rest of the staff of the sites, including Policar’s wife, Priscilla, Jeremy Yang, Lance Lowry, Russ Roca, Khoa Nguyen and Jack Sweeney, have all been terminated as soon as the deal had closed. All six bloggers are now looking to write for other sites, but when Yang was asked what his next step was, he stated, “My next step, well, I’m going to forget about those idiots! They didn’t even tell me that they were selling off the company! This experience has severely traumatized me and I don’t think I can ride bikes again! I’m going to go back and start racing lawn mowers again…”

Priscilla Policar, RL’s wife of nearly 13 years, spoke about the sale. “You know, being married to RL for so long, I would have thought he’d tell me these sorts of things, but he didn’t! He woke up the morning after the deal had closed and demanded eggs and chorizo for breakfast! He doesn’t even like chorizo! I don’t know who he is anymore….” she stated.

The rest of the staff was contacted but all were speechless. In fact when Jack Sweeney, a staffer and Sheldon Brown-wannabe for BikeCommuters.com was approached, he gave reporters the international hand signal for anger and ran away, cursing loudly.

Jack Sweeney visibly upset.

Lance Lowry, a staffer on MtnBikeRiders and BikeCommuters.com, was simply distraught over the sale, that he decided to get away from Ramirez and Policar and move from Orange County, Ca. to Portland, Oregon. As he drove away in his U-Haul Van, he was pumping his fists in the air and yelling, “Damn you both to hell!”

Khoa Nguyen was found later found by family members locked in the bathroom of his new home. He too was upset about the events and was heard saying, “Up yours Moe, up yours RL, screw MtnBikeRiders and BikeCommuters.com!!!” Russ Roca, also a professional photographer and recent recruit to BikeCommuters.com, was clearly bothered by the event and was found in a Long Beach, Ca. wings and beer restaurant stuffing himself with their hottest wings and best beers on tap to wash away the pain.

“The acquisition of MtnBikeRiders.com and BikeCommuters.com from Moe and RL has been in the works since December’s meeting at the Hometown Buffet. This deal went through with only a few stipulations including the gift certificates in lieu of stocks.”, said Sedrik Vomir, Evomo Sponsorship/Marketing Director. “This is our first step towards the purchase of high traffic internet based companies in the form of blogs and user generated content. Our list of companies that we are in talks with his quite large and by 2010 we will have about 45% ownership.”

Both Ramirez and Policar will remain on staff until their replacements can be found. In the meantime, if you are interested in running BikeCommuters.com or MtnBikeRiders.com, please leave a comment below. If you are selected, you will be sent a rose, a voucher for Hometown Buffet and your username and passwords for the site. KHS Bicycles have also donated a KHS Green and Lucky 7 to give to the new Editors of the blogs as a “Welcome Aboard!” gift.

First Ride on the Bandersnatch

Posted by RL Policar On March - 31 - 2008

Saturday I took an early morning ride down to the beach with my dogs in tow(in a trailer) so my legs were out of juice the next day. I was aching to throw a leg over the 29er anyway but woke up at 5am and it was raining lightly. Half an hour later it stopped so I headed out in hopes the trail would be tacky and only slightly wet.

Bandi on the move

This is the 4.5 mile climb Priscilla rode up the day before. I noticed the “dirt” was sticking to my tires pretty badly. By mile 4 or so I felt like I was carrying an extra couple of pounds with me. What we have here, in certain parts, is not mud but clay. Instead of just being wet dirt this stuff literally sticks to everything it can find. My shoes are still a mess.

Vassago in the mist

I was surrounded by fog the entire climb. It made for a dream-like ride up the side of the hill. Very ethereal and really quiet. I felt like I was in a Costa Rican jungle. You’ll have to excuse my infatuation with the plants. We see nothing but dry, brown hills here 9-10 months out of the year.

Christening…who needs champagne?

The Bandersnatch was simply an amazing ride. Rolling up to the trail I instantly noticed my rolling speed was faster than on my Heckler or any other bike I’ve ridden. The geometry for climbing is spot on too. I felt super comfortable and just cranked away. The power transfer with a full rigid setup is unbelievable.

Also a first impression on the Sette Ryde ST-850 dropper seatpost: It works great! It’s so easy to use. When I got to the apex of the hill I’d just pull the trigger and throw my weight down, then let go and I’ve got a low seat, ready for any obstacles on the downhill. Especially in the fog, the terrain would sneak up, but when I saw the hill coming I’d just pull the trigger again and up pops the seat, exactly where I need it for the climb.  The one problem I had was compressing the post. It tended to stick a little. I think this was a combination of my slight frame(150 pounds), the cold and the trail grime. I’ll lube it with some grease and see if that helps. This was only one ride but, for the life of me, I can’t fathom why someone would pay $200 when they could grab one of these for around $20.

Anyway, at the top of the climb I heard mud scraping and looked down to see this mess on the rear end. I know I’ll get grief here for riding on a wet trail, but the trail was hardpacked as you can see in the above pictures. But, again, this is clay so the very top of the ground would peel off and attach itself to the stuff already on my tire. This snowball effect ended my ride and I had to turn back once I hit the top of the climb. Scraped off most of the clay and…time for the downhill!

Not fun to cleanup

Downhills on a full rigid bike just can’t be fun…at least that’s what I thought before. Don’t get me wrong, if you hit a ditch head-on or a large rock, you will know you’re riding a rigid setup. However, the Bandersnatch just hums when the trail goes down. The big wheels smooth out the small chatter pretty good and if you use your body as the suspension it gets fun. Real fun.

As I was half way down the decent I actually let out a laugh. Granted this has happened on my Heckler, but to have no suspension and to be giggling on the way down? This bike is a joy to ride. Plain and simple. I can already tell this will be my go-to bike for any but the roughest rides. I was even able to catch some air off some small jumps and tweak it a bit. Yes, the wheels are large but this bike just makes them so easy to handle.  Steel and big wheels. I have them both, finally, and it is good.

Ride Report: My First Epic

Posted by Priscilla Policar On March - 30 - 2008

30 miles qualifies as an Epic, doesn’t it? Well, this past Saturday I was invited on my first epic mountain bike ride! We hit Chino Hills for a nice loonngg ride. :) It turned out to be a good size group of people, about 14 of us started out together. Our ride started out at 8:30am. And I sure was nervous because I have never ridden more than 14 miles at a time! I was afraid this ride was going to be a little too much for me but my friend Christine assured me that I was going to do fine.

Everyone getting prepped and acquainted.

If you are not familiar with Chino Hills, let me just say that if you don’t like to climb then you will hate it! After about 2 miles into the park you are greeted with a no mercy 1750ft climb that feels never ending! It took us about 45min to make it up this 4.5 mile climb. This is no way to start an Epic!!! Ah well. The sweet payoff though was the downhill singletrack! All you could hear was everyone hooting and hollering with glee as we made it down this hillside. So much fun!!

Another 4 miles and we made a rest stop at Four Corners. Time for snack bars. I made sure to pack lots of treats and some Powerade for an extra boost.

Every ride is filled with adventures. And this ride did not disappoint. I have to say of everything I most enjoyed the singletrack. Chino Hills was incredibly overgrown. Wild flowers galore! They reached way above my head. And I have no idea how our tour guide was able to even find the single track! The space available to ride through was sometimes smaller then the width of my handlebars. Every corner was a new surprise because you just couldn’t see anything around the tall flowers! I really wish I could have gotten some pictures of this but that’s the thing with singletrack. You can’t stop or you hold up everyone behind you! lol.

Here’s one of the guys entering the singletrack.

There were a few casualties too. A busted chain and one of the guys was left on the side of the road with his derailleur in pieces. Ah man, it hurt to see that one. :(

The views were really breath taking.

The other issue with these overgrown wild flowers? Well I quickly found out when I was speeding down the single track with very little clearance for my handlebars, and a short sleeve jersey. Let me just say “OUCH!!!!”. It felt like my arms were being whipped!!! And these weren’t even the worst of it. There were these short, overgrown plants that had bulbs on the end of them. You could hear me screaming, “OW! OW! OW!” all down the hill, as 100′s of these little buggers whipped my legs. One right after the other. :( Luckily one of the gals had some numbing wipes that helped ease the sting a lot. Who would have thought?!?! But the views sure did make it all worth it!

The girls pointed out that the tall wild flowers left souvenirs in my helmet. Hahaha.

We did make a lot of stops for rest, snacks and regrouping too which helped make the ride more doable. I was feeling pretty good until mile 17. We had another 2 mile climb and it was at this point I wanted to throw in the towel. I was TIRED!!! And my legs were burning! But there was no turning back at that point. There was no way I could find my way out of there anyway. :(

We had a nice rest at mile 19 though. And the last 10 miles turned out to be a breeze with just some downhill fireroads. A nice pay off for the long day. But the ride went a little longer than I expected. We didn’t finish until about 2:30 in the afternoon. Well, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a day though! Absolutely beautiful!

Christine and I after the ride. We finished!!!

Ride Report: RL and Moe at the Famous Fullerton Loop

Posted by RL Policar On March - 29 - 2008

Originally myself, Moe and Lance were going to head out to Santiago Oaks to check out the demo bikes from Pivot Cycles. But it didn’t work out since Lance and I had to be somewhere by a certain time. So Moe and I decided to ride our favorite trail, the Fullerton Loop. We were both on our single speed bikes and fully prepared for hurling. I even ate a bit of food right before the ride so I don’t disappoint people just in case RALPH came calling.

First thing we saw on the trail was Priscilla’s nemesis…this sheep charged at her last summer…He’s lucky I wasn’t there, or things would have gotten really Baaaaad between us! Get it Baaaad…aye…nevermind that was weak…

Fullerton is a great place to ride a single speed bike due to the slow rolling hills and quick steep climbs. What’s interesting is, Moe had asked me to see if I can clear a certain climb on our ride. I can normally get to the top without a problem with my SS, but Moe has had some difficulty with his SS on this particular hill. Sure enough we traded and keep in mind my SS is a 26er and his is a 29er. What was weird was, I couldn’t make it up the hill with his 29er at all! Dunno if it had something to do with the bigger wheels or what, but it was tough!

Since it was spring and stuff, I decided to wear my Velotees, Single Speed Shirt just so I could match the mustard plants on the trail.

Here’s Moe showing the world his new Rudy Project sunglasses.

As we were making our way through the last part of the trail a few things caught our attention. I saw this ladder sitting right next to the trail. I wanted to try it but the thing wasn’t secure.

So then we ran into this big ramp! Now that is something I couldn’t resist…

3,2,1 lift off!

Once I got in the air, the landing came up VERY quickly! I managed to hit the transition just fine…

But quickly ate it due to the loose dirt.

Overall Moe and I had a great time at the Loop. We were hoping to run into our buddy Vince Rodarte of KHS Bicycles at the trail when we got back since he said he was riding with his buddy. But the dude never showed, unless he was late. So after the ride, Moe and I capped off the morning with some breakfast at Roadside Cafe. I got me a breakfast burrito and Moe got a breakfast burrito, french toast, hashbrowns, eggs, bacon and coffee…dang for a guy that’s “watching” his figure, he sure can eat a lot!

Oh by the way, that big jump was totally staged…but it looked real, eh?!
