Crashing – All part of mountain biking

Posted by Joe Solancho On June - 26 - 2008

As you recall on Father’s Day weekend, I took my friend Val Macatangay for a ride at our local trail – Coal Canyon.

Since then, he’s been frequenting this trail.  Almost on a daily basis, Val hits the trail at 6 am – rides from his house and climbs a little further than the last.  Little by little, he is getting better.  He recently told me that he is getting acclimated to what the trail has to offer.  He enjoys the workout of the climb and looks forward to the reward of the descent…

Several days ago, Val headed up Coal Canyon.  On his way back down, he was going pretty fast.  On a fireroad descent, you can easily let things fly.  As he neared the bottom, he overshot a left-hand turn.  Panicked, unable to unclip and the fear of going over the side – he laid his bike down.  He stopped his momentum with the left side of his body, including his face…OUCH!  Unable to ride his bike all the way back to his house, Val had his wife pick him up at the trail head.

The Damage:

  • Road rash – left cheek (face not the backside J)
  • Road rash – left leg
  • Tweaked rear wheel

Crashes are common for both beginners and experience riders in our sport.  For Val, he did not let this crash deter him.  He was back at Coal Canyon two days after grinding up the mountain and bombing back down.  Way to go Val!

Interbike to Stay in Vegas

Posted by Jeremy Yang On June - 26 - 2008

After months of conducting studies, polling people, researching different offers from different cities and sitting around twiddling their thumbs, Interbike has sadly decided to stay in Las Vegas.

Here is the info via B.R.A.I.N.:

After two years of collecting potential host city data and retailer, manufacturer and industry partner feedback, Interbike management has announced the trade show will remain in Las Vegas, and that they are currently finalizing an agreement with the Sands Expo and Convention Center to host the industry’s show for a minimum of three more years, beginning with the 2010 show.

“The decision to keep the Interbike show in Vegas comes after years of research and communication with our retailer attendees, exhibiting manufacturers and important industry partners,” said Lance Camisasca, Interbike’s industry consultant. “The data and communication we have collected, along with industry recommendations from organizations like the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) and Bikes Belong, confirm our decision to keep the show in Las Vegas.”

Thursday Tech Tip: How to Build a Bicycle Wheel

Posted by RL Policar On June - 26 - 2008

Khoa made an in-depth video showing you how to build a wheel. He’s using Mavic 717 rims, American Classic Hubs and DT Swiss Spokes. Since building wheels isn’t something that takes a few minutes, I’d suggest you grab a drink and a snack before you watch the video.

By the way, the wheelset he built are sooooo sweet! Black rim, nipples and hub with silver spokes!

Enjoy!

Golden Fischers Dealer Camp Memo

Posted by Jeremy Yang On June - 25 - 2008

Golden Fischers this past week had a dealer only camp in Fullerton, California. This was to introduce to their vast dealership the three new technological marvels that Golden Fischers has come up within the past few months. These technological advances include: the new E2 geometry, HiLo full suspension bikes and Active Spoke Pivot (ASP) technology. Golden Fischers sent out a follow up memo for all of their technology to their dealers that, oddly enough, we happen to receive. Read on for more info on their new technology:

Exodus 2 (E2) geometry comes in the wake of the revolutionary Exodus geometry introduced a mere 2 months ago. Yes, Exodus geometry was supposed to be the beginning and the end of all geometry, but it turned out to be just a progression. E2, on the other hand, makes significant strides where the revolutionary Exodus geometry was lacking including increasing the ease of steering the bike from “easy” to “squirrely easy” all the while maintaining stability at high speeds. Trust us, you’ll like E2… you must like E2… your customers will like E2… that is until E3 comes out.

HiLo replaces all other types of full suspension bikes currently being produced by Golden Fischers. HilLo replaces the Queen Fishers and the Race Week bikes that were introduced just a few months ago. The HiLo bikes replace all other full suspension bikes in Golden Fischers lineup because the HiLo bike is simply better. In fact HiLo bikes are so good you will never need to sell another type of full suspension bike, ever. HiLo incorporates the E2 geometry on a new full suspension platform that runs circles around the old Queen Fishers and Race Week bikes. Using Dog Racing Shocks front and back, HiLo bikes will take you as High or as Lo as you will ever want to go, with super plush suspension or super firm suspension, as a XC race designed bike or as a full on freeride heavy and durable bike. As a dealer, you’ll never need to sell another full suspension bike again… until we come out with HiLo2.

Dog Racing Shocks will be designing 511mm offset forks to work with E2 geometry. You read that right, 511mm! These special E2 forks will only be available on the E2 lineup of bikes including none of the bikes currently being sold, but all the new bikes being produced at the factories overseas. Some how, we were able to convince Dog Racing Shocks not to make the 511mm offset forks for aftermarket use. Instead, they will stick with the tried and true 42 mm forks for other bike manufacturers and the aftermarket ummm… market.

The last change to Golden Fischers lineup for the year 2009 is the addition of Active Spoke Pivot technology stolen… adapted from Golden Fischers parent company, Trex. ASP has revolutionized how active the rear suspension works when braking. It does this by replacing straight spokes with curvy pivoted spokes. Now, every time the rear wheel moves due to trail conditions, the spokes pivot too. This results in less suspension bob, less brake dive, less trail chatter, less locking up and skidding, less tire wear, and as a surprisingly benefit, it also has less wear and tear on your helmet of all places. With ASP, all previous full suspension bikes made by Golden Fischers are now obsolete and manufacturing for those bikes will halt starting yesterday. Those dealers who still have these obsolete bikes on your showroom floor should try to sell them NOW before the new bikes come in.

Dealers shouldn’t worry though, as all the old technology – Exodus geometry, classic Race Week full suspension bikes and the ever popular Queen Fisher bikes – will not be supported anymore. That means the clients who bought yesterdays proprietary technology will be out of luck. This should amount to high client turnover rate as the Golden Fischers clients will need to purchase new technology to continue riding Golden Fischer bikes. Again, don’t worry dealers as Golden Fischer will do this all again as Golden Fischer becomes the driving force behind 31â€? wheeled bikes (pronounced Three One-ers), E3 geometry and HiLo2 due to come out in 2 to 3 months.

New Build Project: XC Race and Epic Machine

Posted by RL Policar On June - 24 - 2008

We’ve got a new build project that we’ll be working on soon. This one is a bit unique from the Ultimate All Mountain Bike, The Sette Reken, and the Full Suspension Single Speed. The bike we’ll be building has two purposes.

1. Be comfortable enough to ride epics

2. Be aggressive enough to race with

I’m sure there are plenty of bikes out there that can do that, but the goal of our build is to customize it for the rider. As you all know, Priscilla is our Podium Girl…no she’s not the one that gives the winners their medal and a peck on the cheek, nope, she’s our girl that places when she races. She’s also been known to enjoy an epic ride.

The problem that Priscilla faces with her current set up, a XC hard tail is that it can be a harsh ride, especially if she’s on the trail for hours at a time. That said, this bike we’re building will suit her racing and epic needs. We’re going to build it up with some great parts…nothing that would break the bank and of course some pink accents to celebrate that she’s a chick.

If you’re wondering which frame we’ll be using…here’s a hint!

We’ll be getting this frame later on this week and once we have it in hand, we’ll post some glamour shots of it…you know on the bed, with a feather boa and all polished up….oooh!
