Rigid Update

Posted by RL Policar On September - 19 - 2008

Last night was the first full run I had with my Rigid bike. A few days ago I was only able to take it out for a few miles, but last night we did about 11miles of riding at the Fullerton Loop.

Going into this rigid conversion, I honestly thought I’d get beat up like crazy. To my surprise, my ride was rather pleasant. Sure its stiffer than having a suspension fork, but I quickly learned that if I were to soften my grip on the bars and put some weight towards the back, the jarring effect weren’t so bad.

Weekday Ride Report: Coal Canyon and the Rattlesnake

Posted by Joe Solancho On September - 18 - 2008

Yesterday I wasn’t feeling well so I left work early. After taking a brief nap when I got home, I decided to go for a ride in hopes that I’ll sweat out whatever was making me feel under the weather.

Closest trail to my house was Coal Canyon. As I mentioned on previous articles, Coal Canyon is a ride in, ride out type of ride. It’s a long grind up with a rewarding descent on a fire road. The ride up is usually uneventful. You either listen to music or enjoy the surroundings to get your mind off the constant climb.

Reaching the 3 mile marker, I see a rattlesnake on the middle of the road. This one had a real pretty color approximately 4ft long. Off course I had to stop and take a short video. The last time I ran into a rattler on the trail was when I rode at San Clemente Single Tracks (SCST), May of this year. Then I was only able to take a picture of the snake coil up as I ran out of space in my memory card for a video clip. With the Flip Mino in hand, I recorded the rattler move to the side of the road. Always at a safe distance, I gave it some assistance by throwing little pebbles at it.

After the entertainment, I continued to climb for another half mile then I decided to turn back. Bombing to the bottom was fun as usual however there were plenty of sandy patches that slowed me down. By now, the sun was setting thus getting darker in some areas of the trail. As I turned one of the corners, there was a buck that I startled. I was able to get the Flip Mino out to record however, the buck was too far and was just a speck on the clip. Good times, even when solo!

Free Agent Bike/Skateboard Helmet Review

Posted by RL Policar On September - 18 - 2008

For the guys and gals that don’t like the conventional multi-vented helmets, there is the option to use a skater helmet or some may say a BMX helmet. I’m one of those guys and I prefer it because of its style, color and affordability. This helmet will retail around $20 at any bike shop.

This helmet accommodates wigs too…that’s if you’re into that kinda stuff.

I’ve been wearing this helmet for about 2 years now and I’ve been very happy with it. I use it at almost every ride that I go on and at this time, my helmet cam is set up on it. The smooth surfaces is ideal for mounting lights, cameras and Faux-hawks if needed.

The helmet does come with 3 sizes of padding, S,M, L. Since I have a fat head, I am using the large pads. If your pads eventually get worn out, you can order some more from the place you bought it for. I think my pads are due for a replacement…

The only problem with this helmet is that it gets HOT! It only has 12 small vents so that means you’re practically wearing a bowl. So to remedy that problem, wear this helmet during cooler days or for winter.
Overall I’ve enjoyed this helmet, its affordable, durable and it looks cool. Regular helmets don’t look all that great on my head. I have a round face so the Free Agent helmet compliments it. My kids have this helmet, in fact we raced with them last year.

If its good enough for me, its certainly good enough for my kids!
