*Editorial: Here’s the much anticipated race report from Team Rider, Kim Finch.

Nationals are always a big event. We rolled in very early Saturday morning to Fontana and as expected Vendor Row is packed. With numerous events about to unfold, I hit the registration table got to get David, Tony & I registered. Back to the truck and gear up for practice. Ran in to teammates RL “Boss” & Moe “The Moe”. We all headed to the top of the mountain. Sport & Beginner had early morning practice time, which was great! The shuttle line was really short which always seems rare.

I was able to get in 5 practice runs before 11:00am! The course was not too technical, but the winds on Saturday were so strong they were blowing me off my lines. The swooping “S” banked turns were so much fun! There were some ruts that seem to cut across the course in a manner that could cause some problems, but was able to find my lines and felt really good about the practice. Afterward we were off to eat at Jose’s Tacos nearby.

Sunday we get to Fontana, check in, set up base and wait! The up side this morning there was “NO” wind! Practice time was a bit later in the morning. I cruised around and ran into the rest of the team! Talked with Nancy Harris who had been approved to race in the Sport Category with Traci Adams and I. I was very excited about this, as Nancy has spent a lot of her time coaching and helping me over the past year, so really thought it would be fun to see how I finish my time compared to hers! I was able to get in two practice runs however, it was not as clean as I had hoped. The drop, hard left in to the “S” turns I kept washing out, once hitting the ground and one a near miss. I was determined to get this section cleared as I had cleared it all runs the prior day. I hiked back up to the turn above it until I nailed it! Upon completing it, I called it a day until race run. Weather was getting hotter but the winds seem to be nothing more then a breeze at the top of the hill.

Race run: Sport women were the first down the mountain today which is kind of cool as I didn’t have to wait out those pre-race jitters. I followed behind Traci; the count down began with the last BEEP I was off! First section clean pulled each line as I planed. Had to toe dab right, left turn due to slide off line and caught a bit of the rut at the bottom. I headed to the rock drop I was struggling with earlier that had and clean the rocks but had to again put a foot down at the apex of the left hand turn. This was not good for me as I lost my momentum to start the “S” banking turns. Stood up on the pedals and hit it as hard as I could. Swept the turns clean, even got a little air off the last “G” out. Hit the bottom and headed for the lower rock garden. Took the new line I had just learned earlier that was a straight shot to the bottom. Was clean & I felt pretty fast over all. I could hear Wes cheering as I went through the lower section. Thanks Wes!

Over all I had a lot of fun! Nancy & Traci were waiting for me at the finish line! Nancy took 1st time 2:58, I got 2nd time 3:20 & Traci took 3rd time 3:22. As you can see was a really close race. I was very excited to finish close to Nancy and thrilled to see that Traci’s training is paying off! Thanks to all the support of our sponsors and all my teammates! Was a great weekend of fun and looking forward to Santa Yenz & Woodward West!

Fontana City Nationals Race Report: RL Policar

Posted by RL Policar On March - 31 - 2010

Fontana City Nationals is considered to be a big deal in the mountain biking community of SoCal. This event is part of the Kenda Cup West Series. The Nationals always yields some of the world’s best talent racing on local grounds.

Big names from some of the biggest race teams come all the way out to Fontana to get their lungs infected with what local racers call, the “Fontucky Lung” or “Fontucky Fungus.”

For the downhill race, they did things a bit different. Usually the Pros and Experts go first, then the Sport and Beginners. But this time us lowly beginners and sport racers went ahead of everyone. So this means the level of vultures err, I mean spectators are high and these folks love a good crash.

Saturday was practice day. This allowed me to get 6 runs, all clean. With each run I did, I kept getting faster and better. Come Sunday morning, we had a 2 hour window to practice and I was able to get 2 more runs in. One thing I didn’t get to mention. This weekend was something special for me.Why? It’s because I was riding the KHS Lucky 7. I had been racing on the Sette Venom, but when the opportunity came up for the Lucky 7, I jumped on it.

I gotta give props to Mr. C at KHS Bicycles for allowing me to have this opportunity to ride/race the Lucky 7.

The seed list is posted and I noticed that there are a total of 10 racers in my category, Beginner Men, 27-34. I see the usual suspects and a few that I’ve never heard of. Funny thing about racing in Fontana, you eventually become friends with some of your competition. So that means you wish them luck and safety, at the same time, you want to beat them.

When our group got called, we lined up and I was the 6th rider out of the gate. One by one, racers before me were hitting the trail. When I get up to the gate, I can hear the beeps, on the 6th beep I’m supposed to go.

BEEP! I take off, but making sure that I am fast, yet controlled through the first few turns. I’m midway through the upper portion of the mountain, on a sharp left turn, my front wheel washes out, I dab my foot and kept pedaling. I was so frustrated that I almost felt like giving up. But in my head I somehow convinced myself that it was just one simple mistake and that I’m going to finish this race with a clean run.

I keep working hard through the rest of the course, I find myself through a few G-outs and then to the bottom. I work my way towards the lower rock garden and I quickly find the line that I’ve been practicing. I go down it without a problem. Then I suddenly hear Wes’ voice saying “Good Job RL!” I lose focus only because I didn’t expect him there, the dude has a broken hip! Anyway, I brush against the boulder, I thought I was going down, but I gained control and went on towards the wall.

RL Policar DH
I find myself wanting to pedal faster, but my legs can’t. I stand up a few times to sprint only to find myself sitting back down due to the pain that lactic acid had dealt. I eventually cross the finish line and my lungs and nostrils are on fire.

After a few hours, results were finally posted. Here’s what’s frustrating and satisfying about this race…3rd, 4th, and 5th, all have the same time 2:47. But here’s the definitive times that separated us:

3rd 02:47.03 Mark Robertson
4th 02:47.15 Willy Ocampo
5th 02:47.94 RL Policar

I couldn’t believe it! As soon as I saw those numbers, I had two feelings. I was upset because if I didn’t have that wash out issue on the mountain, I’m sure I would have had a better result, but I was also glad to know that I can remain competitive to Mark and Willy. One thing you have to understand, Mark and Willy are the 2 guys that usually end up on the podium. They’ve had some really consistent, fast results during the Winter Series. So in a sense I was pretty proud of myself knowing that I can ride competitively against the faster riders of my category.

5th place. That’s my Lil’ nephew, Jake in 6th Place. Yeah he’s Joe’s son, but we just found out we’re distant cousins, small world eh?

Update on Team Racer, Wes Castro

Posted by RL Policar On March - 29 - 2010

Well here is a little update from what the Neurologist found. The cause of the numbness in my leg is from a pinched nerve and a small partial tare. Which will heal and go back to normal with time and as the swelling goes down. As for the burning pain that is running up the whole right side of my body well that’s a bruised Sciatic Nerve which I will have to live with no real time table for when that will go away, it will eventually go away as I start to be able to work out. Man I’m a mess. I will be out of work for 12 weeks for sure without a doubt.

Next appointment will be with the Orthopedic Surgeon on March 31st. For more xrays and course of attack Surgery and Rehab or just Rehab.

I wanted to really thank all my friends for sticking with me and keeping me in your prayers. As this has been a really stressful time in my life especially not being able to work. You guys are the best group of friends anybody can have.

I will try and make it out to Fontana at least one day with my Cheer out fit and pom poms and megaphone to cheer you guys on.

Wesley “GQ” Castro

See how I highlighted when he said he wanted to try and make it out to the next Fontana race? Well here he is! He even drove himself!

RL, Wes “GQ” mad stylin with his pimp cane and Joe.
Wes Castro!

Funny story about this. As I’m entering the lower rock garden of the Fontan City National Race. I suddenly hear, “Good job RL!” I knew it was Wes’ voice, but I didn’t know he was going to be out there. If anything, I was surprised and I wanted to turn around real quick to make sure it was him. Since I was surprised, I ended up losing some control of my bike and brushed against the boulder to my right, but I was able to recover and finish my race run.

I was really encouraged to see Wes out there and we’re all still praying and hoping that he’ll make a speedy recovery.
