I thought things would get better the more I went.

Posted by RL Policar On August - 6 - 2011

There’s a local bike shop near my office that is on State College and Lincoln in the city of Anaheim. I’ve been there numerous of times and I swear, each visit, I leave even more disappointed than my previous time.

Here’s my reasons why:

1. Lack of selection-Inventory is pretty low. He never has anything in stock. Each time I go in looking for a part, he’ll have to place an order for it.

2. Prices-For some odd reason, his prices are WAY higher than of those from other shops. I’m not sure why he thinks he can tack on a few more bucks on the MSRP…

3. Not helpful-Just today I went in asking if he had any seat post shims. He looks at me and said, “Seat Post Shims?” I said Yes and his response, “Seat Post Shims? Hmm…Seat Post Shims??? (with a puzzled look) Let me see if I have anything.” He shows me what he had, 2 of the same size, which happen to be incorrect size that I needed. Typically if a shop doesn’t have something, they’re willing to order it for you just to keep you as a customer. I asked him if he can order it for me, he says, “No this is all I have…” At that point I leave.

Here’s the thing, I keep going back to this shop hoping that his service and selection gets better. I’ve been there at total of 4 times and today was my last. I’m all about supporting your local bike shop, but how can I do that if the guy doesn’t even have the stuff I need nor does he want to help me. So for now, I’m going else where with my money.

A different kind of weight weenie

Posted by RL Policar On August - 5 - 2011

If you’re one of those guys who likes to save a gram here and there on your bike parts, you may want to pay attention. I’ve never been a weight weenie, but I do appreciate a lighter bike. But recently I’ve discovered that I can ride faster without the need of expensive and lighter bike parts, all I needed to do was drop a few pounds from my body.

For the last 2 months I’ve been participating in the Nutrisystem Program and have lost 22lbs! What was encouraging during this weight loss process was see and feeling how my riding was improving with each pound that I lost. Each week, riding my bike became easier and ultimately breathed new life to my sport.

This got me thinking, since I already have a decent bike with decent parts, there was no need to upgrade anything because there would have been no way I could shed 22lbs off my bike. Besides, wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just lose weight rather than spending hundreds of dollars just to save a few grams on bike parts?
weight weenie

So if you’re looking at that photo above and wondering how an XO derailleur could be heavier than a burger, its simple really, just think of it as losing weight (burger) out weighs the benefit of the grams you save with the bike part. I also want to add that having lost some weight, I am so much faster now. In fact, I can actually keep up with Priscilla on our rides! Yay! By the way, I’m not done losing weight. My goal is to drop an additional 28lbs.

I’ve been keeping track of my weight loss on my other blog, feel free to check it out. If you want to lose weight and get healthy on Nutrisystem? Join today by calling 1-888-853-4689

You’re riding along and then you gotta poop!

Posted by RL Policar On August - 3 - 2011

First rule, ALWAYS carry some sort of toilet paper/napkin or paper towel in your hydration pack. You never know if you’ll need it to blow your nose or use it for first aid.

Then the next step is to watch this video. No its not me, but its a great “how to” on going poop in the woods.

Good luck!

“Back in the day…”

Posted by RL Policar On August - 2 - 2011

If you’ve ever seen Napoleon Dynamite, then you’re familiar with the character Uncle Rico. He’s apparently stuck in 82 and keeps reliving the glory days. What I’m discovering as I ride, I’ll meet older mountain bikers who often talk about their “Uncle Rico” days. They often discuss how they used to race this and that, or have ridden here and there. Frankly I’m kinda put off by it because it seems like these guys are trying to prove something.
back in 82

If I may, to the Uncle Rico’s out there, there’s no need to feel insecure and try to convince other riders that you used to be great. Frankly, most of us wouldn’t care if you were some sort of pro back in the day. Let’s just ride! Besides, if you were a racer back then, I’m sure you’ll still posses mad biking skills 20 years later.
