Night Time XC Races Coming to SoCal

Posted by RL Policar On April - 25 - 2011

Just got an email from Race Director, Omar Almaguer of Cycle Events Company talking about a new 3 race series to happen in Bonelli Park starting this June. Races start around 6pm on Thursdays. All sorts of categories to race in, from young groms to Expert/Pro.

If I can get out of work on time, I may check these races out and see if I can rock it with the tandem bike. Now I gotta find a Stoker….

Race fees are pretty low, $25 per race or $70 for all 3!

For more info about dates, times and all the fancy stuff, check out Cycle Events Company.

Take a Kid MTB Day Oct 2, 2010

Posted by RL Policar On September - 15 - 2010

Got this from one of the local mtb forums, STR
Take a Kid MTB Day Oct 2, 2010!

4th annual SoCal Stylie-Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

Huge fun for the groms and parents. last year i think we had 70 -80 peeps with 40 kids!!!

Plans this year = very similar to prior years

Meet -> Ride -> BBQ -> Kids free off the hook raffle

Date: Saturday, Oct 2nd 2010

Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm

Place -Meet at Irvine Regional Park 9:00am. Lot #10. (park site has bench tables, bathrooms, water fountains, outside sink etc) .
Quick direction to lot…Enter park >Follow sign towards GROUP AREA 1,2,3 (i.e. go right) ->Drive -> pass duck pond on left -> Drive a bit more -> look for sign on left that says #10. Park you car, truck, SUV, etc…pretty simple, huh

Ride -Start rolling no later that 9:30am. Based on who shows figure out ride(s) based on “level”

“Picnic” – at Irvine park to follow> Start around 11:30 and go to maybe 1:00 or a bit later. Food, drink and kids free raffle -swag donated by Local Bikes Shops and bike manufacturers!!

check out some of the swag being donated -> http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/general-discussion/53467-swagalicious-take-kids-mountain-bike-day-boo-tay.html#post776495

We can decide specific routes (try to accomodate all levels) but will be at least two groups

1) Trailer Crash Kids – Those small groms and parents pulling trailers seeking “flat” terrain in either Irvine Park or Peters Canyon.

2) Groms with Moms and/or Pops – Second group heads to Peters Canyon for loop(s). btw- if you can pull trailer in peters feel free to join this ride

Will ask for a few adults familiar with each park to volunteer to lead or sweep

Similar to prior years we can have a third group for the more experienced young guns to hit Santiago Oaks

As expected everyone’s safety particularly that of the children is most important. It is your sole responsibility to watch out for your child, guests and yourself. All underage riders must be accompanied by a parent and/or guardian. Please make sure you and your child has the proper safety and repair gear (e.g. helmet, pads, spare tubes, etc), food/water and properly working bike or trailer. Please also step up to protect all others who you think may need some support along the way.

In regard to picnic/bbq as always i will provide BBQ and will bring burgers, dogs, buns, condiments for all.

All i ask is that others please volunteer to bring some other stuff such as plates, napkins, drinks, as well as any other food items cold or for the BBQ. EZ up, chairs,

EDIT: In regard to food/stuff for the BBQ I have no issues contimnuing to paying for / providing burgers. dogs, buns, cheese, ketchup/mustard for all peeps big and small.

That said as always i ask everyone to bring the other items such as:
paper plates
plastic forks, spoons, knifes
napkins
cups
drinks (water, soda, “special red cuip innards” for the big peeps)
chips / dip
fruit / vegi platters

Similarly please feel free to all bring other food items to grill, Ribs, sasuage) and other cold “main dishes”.

Fat people are harder to kidnap…

Posted by RL Policar On July - 28 - 2010

I figure at the current weight that I am, if someone tried to steal me, they’d throw their back out before I end up in a trunk of a Buick Regal…

I recently got my test results from my doctor and from what she said, I’m at risk. My cholesterol is borderline high at 206 and I’m at risk for diabetes. Then I also learned from Priscilla that my current health condition now (in my 30′s) will determine my overall health and well being later on in life.

My doctor suggested I lose between 5-15lbs to make a difference in my cholesterol and diabetes risk. After planning out my weightloss program, I decided to call my buddy Moe to see if he’d be interested in dropping weight with me. Apparently Moe and I have the same allergy to food, when ever we eat it, our guts get bigger…The more we talked about losing weight the more we got motivated to do so. We then factored in a bet to see who can lose the most amount of weight.

We finalized a deal…and as funny as it sounds, the loser will have to pay for dinner at Todai, a Japanese seafood buffet. We’ll have 8 weeks for our little contest, basically our final weigh in will be the week of Interbike. There was also another reason why we wanted to lose weight. We wanted to look all sexy and hot when we go to Vegas. We are representing both MtnBikeRiders.com and BikeCommuters.com, so that means we have to at least look like we ride bikes and appear healthy, right?

As of last Sunday, Moe and I weighed ourselves with the witness of Priscilla, she actually took pics of our numbers as we stood on the scale.

Moe weighed in at: 185lbs

RL weighed in at:214lbs ( yeah I’m a big boy)

We both have some definite goals, but in reality we’re just trying to get healthy. So who ever loses this bet, still wins…Wish us luck!

Oh I forgot to mention, the loser has to put on a hula out fit, complete with coconut shell bra and grass skirt. He’ll also have to do a little hula dance before the actual group ride that we’re planning.
