Victims of our Own Success

Posted by RL Policar On October - 29 - 2007

About a week ago my email was hacked. Guess what, this hacker is part of the bike industry. How do I know that, well for one thing he was emailing my bike industry contacts. People that we deal with for reviews, ads and etc. This punk sent an email to some of the major players that we’re working with for 08.

He sent emails basically trying to ruin my name and our site’s credibility. After a few phone calls to do some damage control with some of our contacts, we’re back on track. If you’re one of the companies we deal with and received an email from my old account asking for money to do product reviews or anything that doesn’t sound like something I would write, I do apologize in advance. It wasn’t me that sent it, it was the hacker.

Besides we’ve never charged for our reviews and people of the industry know that.

Here’s the kicker...I KNOW WHO YOU ARE MR. HACKER andWe’re going after you and do this the right and LEGAL way.

What was encouraging from this whole thing was talking to our contacts. People from all types of bike related companies that I spoke to this morning knew that I wouldn’t send those kinds of emails. Once they heard my voice explaining things, they got back on our side. So if anything, Mr. Hacker, you’re little attempt to ruin me and our sites this week made me sound more sincere and real to the bike companies that we work with.

I don’t think he realized that I keep in contact with our friends of the industry on a weekly basis, in fact we ride bikes with them, have BBQ’s and drink beer with them. So nice try, you’ll get what’s coming to you.

To our readers: Please note that we have never been paid to do a review and although you see ads on our site, the revenue from these ads are solely for the purpose of paying for hosting services, going to Interbike, Sea Otter and other events. We do this because we love cycling, not to get rich.

Customer support that blows…

Posted by Moe Ramirez On October - 25 - 2007

As I was riding downhill at Chino Hills, my K2 Lithium 4.0 started to make this horrible noise. Turns out the bearings from the Shock linkage basically disintegrated.

First thing I did was contact K2 to see about replacement bearings, they responded by telling me that I couldn’t purchase the bearings by themselves, but I had to buy the whole pivot assembly. WTF? Fine, I replied, how much is it? Answer: 80 bucks + s/h but the part is backordered and it won’t be in stock for about 1-3 months, WTF? So I did a search on bike bearings, that lead me to BocaBearings.com, I entered the dimensions of the bearings and voila, a slew of choices popped up on my screen. I chose the $16 Sealed Bearings and the bearings were at my door in 3 days. RL installed the bearings, which fit perfectly, and the K2 Lithium 4.0 is ready to rock.

It is unfortunate that the customer support sucks at K2/Iron horse, I really like riding the K2 but let’s say I won’t be buying another one.

I just…(blanked)…myself!

Posted by RL Policar On October - 23 - 2007

So the other day I was talking to a shop employee who was definitely into bikes. He started talking about the new Marzocchi forks and what not. I don’t even recall what he was saying until he tells me that he “just jizzed” himself when he saw this new fandangled fork.

Mind you, this isn’t the first time someone told me that they just messed themselves when they saw a new fancy schmancy product to hit the market. There was another time when a former wrench was telling me all about a 29er frame and while he was explaining the great things about this frame…he would roll back his eyes…make gestures as if he’s pleasuring himself, at the same time making that hmm donut Homer Simpson noise…

Here’s what I don’t get…why do guys do that? I’ve never heard of a female talking about how she just got an “O” when she saw a new product. If anything these dorks that do that look so dumb…and perverted. So what’s the moral? Well, keep bikes and your sexual desires separated!

Busted Cog on the Gary Fisher 29er

Posted by RL Policar On January - 16 - 2007

This morning Jeremy and I went out for a quick 8 miler ride. As he started to climb a hill, the gear he was on slipped. But after inspecting his bike, we noticed that he completely broke off the cog from the cassette. Dang that sucks!

Hopefully this is covered under warranty since his bike is only 6 months old.
