Training on the Tandem

Posted by RL Policar On November - 2 - 2007

Last night Breanna and I hit a small portion of the Loop in order to help us get ready for the big Mt Sac Fat Tire Classic race this Sunday.

Yah I know my jersey is too tight…But I do want to thank my boys, Vince C. and Vince R. at KHS Bicycles for hooking us up with some jerseys for race. Now we look Legit Man!

I’m learning that there are alot of things that I had prejudged about tandem biking that aren’t necessarily true.

I thought that tandem bikes are slower and that its tougher to climb hills.

One thing I’m finding out is that climbing on a tandem is half as hard as it would have been if I did it by myself.

Think about it, we’ve got one bike, same wind drag (if that applies to mountain biking), but twice the power. Breanna and I figured out a system where we keep the rear wheel from spinning out too much during a climb. Basically I lean forward, while she leans back. Her weight holds down the rear end from spinning out. We’re also pretty fast on the flats. Anytime we had an opportunity, we’d get on the big chain ring in the front and mash it out. We also practiced drills such as standing up on a sprint and during a bump.

Well, we’re pretty excited about the race this weekend. We’re hoping to have more fun than anything.

Thursday Night Ride Report

Posted by RL Policar On October - 18 - 2007

Priscilla and I headed out for our weekly ride at the Loop. Man ever since she started riding the Motobecane Fly Pro she’s way faster. She was already fast, but on that machine, being 23lbs…she’s like a rocket on wheels!

This was my view most of the ride, she’s got incredible speed and that’s why she’s in front of me the majority of the time. Well, its not such a bad place to be if you ask me.

Though she’s a fast girl on two wheels, she does have an arch nemesis….this railroad tie that lays on the ground to prevent corrosion on the trail. For as long as I can remember, this little thing has always gotten her. It’s as if this thing reaches out and grabs her rear wheel or pedal every time she crosses it. But no thanks to El Crapo camera, I couldn’t get the picture to come out.

Our ride was cut short due to the lack of lights, my bad. So to make up for the shorter distance, we had to really hustle to make sure we had some light when riding back to the car. Well, as fast as I could go on a 33lb bike…that plan didn’t quite happen. We managed to get back to the car safely, but I had to use my camera’s flash to help see certain parts of the trail…ya I know…ghetto.

It’s been really encouraging seeing Priscilla progress as a rider. Well except for that log thing she tries to cross…But seriously, when she first started riding with me, I was the one that had to wait for her and take it slow. Now, it’s the other way around. I’m having to ask her to slow down. I’ve even said “Go ahead, just wait up for me at the top.” Sure it can be humbling at times, but its really cool to see her carve out some single track.

Asian Invasion Night Ride

Posted by RL Policar On October - 11 - 2007

This evening Priscilla, Khoa, my friend Jon and I did some night riding at the local trail, the Fullerton Loop.

Priscilla graciously took the photo for us. The three shown are from some sort of Asiany country. Jon and I are both Filipino, Khoa said he’s half Vietnamese and half black, the lower half….

Khoa and Jon was rolling with some nice Night Rider lights. Khoa even let Priscilla borrow some halogen light he had. But I was sporting some cheapo lights that didn’t do anything other than make things that are 6″ in front of me brighter.

Here’s an action shot…I’m trailing behind everyone as Khoa and Priscilla lead the way.

The highest point of the ride provides a nice view of the city below. Unfortunately I’m subjected to use a camera that sucks.

Anyhow we had a blast. Night riding is always fun because it can make any ho-hum trail super fun to ride.

Sunday Ride

Posted by RL Policar On October - 7 - 2007

Once in a while our Church service is later on in the day on some Sundays. So this gave Priscilla and I some time to go for a quick ride.

On our way back home, we decided to take some “modeling shots.” Being a former Super Male Model, I felt like I was back on the run way back in Milan…check out my serious shot.

Here’s Priscilla showing offer her “I’m a bad ass” on the bike shot. I was actually impressed that she was able to lift up her 30lbs bike over her head.

Then while we walked away to try and take more modeling shots, I turned around to find these two were going at it…in broad day light!

We started to throw rocks at them to make them stop…but they keep going!

Tandemania at the Fullerton Loop

Posted by RL Policar On October - 3 - 2007

Last week I asked my 9 year old daughter if she would be interested in racing the Mt. Sac Fat Tire Classic with me on our tandem. Mind you, she tried trail riding when she was younger, she had a bad time and that obviously had a negative impact on her. Well until now. So I took my KHS Tandemania Alite and set it up to handle the trail. I installed a Marzocchi Bomber fork and a set of Specialized Enduro tires. Then we headed out to the Fullerton Loop and did a 6 mile training ride.

I tried to use the Oregon Scientific ATC2K helmet cam, but I had it pointed down too low.
