Two top Colorado mountain-bike racers face felony criminal-impersonation charges after allegedly cheating in last year’s Leadville Trail 100.

Veteran endurance athlete Wendy Lyall, 36, used Katie Brazelton’s entry number in the 2009 race, finishing second in the women’s age 40-49 class.

“It probably would have gone unnoticed except the woman who did race came in second in her age group, and in front of a thousand people, one of them went up and stood on the podium and accepted the award and accepted the trophy and the prizes that went with it,” race founder and organizer Ken Chlouber said.

Lyall has been charged with criminal impersonation, a Class 6 felony. Brazelton, 40, will face the same charge, District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said. Class 6 is the lowest felony charge.

“After talking with people in the race, this is something very serious,” Hurlbert said.

Buncha idiots…

Race Across The Sky-Movie Review

Posted by RL Policar On October - 23 - 2009

Last night the MtnBikeRiders.com Crew set out to go see the biggest mountain bike movie ever produced.

Moe, Khoa, Romanian Thunda’ (Gabe), RL, Priscilla and Randall. Jeremy was there last night, but met us at the movie theater.

I say the biggest because I’ve yet to see a movie/film/video go through a “National Showing” of this magnitude. Race Across the Sky was geared to showcase the two main “characters” in the movie, Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens during the Leadville 100 of 2009.

So lets get down to the nitty gritty. Fantastic cinematography! HD quality, lots of overhead-aerial shots, great music score and I loved the side stories they showed. As impressive the race was between the pros, I was more pulled in by all the stories of regular folks trying to finish this race. At times the movie was very emotional and I even felt like I could relate to some of the people they showed.

Two particular situations in the movie, don’t worry I won’t give all of it away, but there was a couple. She got into an accident, and the husband rushes over to her, only to find her laid out in the middle of the road. He basically thought she was dead. Anyhow, that whole story of this couple really tugged at my heart because I wouldn’t know what to do if I Priscilla got hit by a car like that person did.

The second heart tugger of the movie was this guy from Denver who had been racing in the Leadville 100 for the last 15 years. He had a great heart about him, and check this out. While all the other racers were decked out in lycra, carbon bikes and all that. He shows up in a Dickies work shirt, 90′s style helmet and a 90′s style AMP Mountain Bike (Tony still has one!). This guy finished the race and he was smiling the whole time.

Ok I think I’ve said way too much about the story line, but if you were to ask me, “was the movie good?” I would have to say, yes! Again, the footage was awesome, stories were great, but I would have liked it more if they had more of those.

I’m really hoping this movie will come out on DVD, that way more people can see it. Last night’s event was a “one night only” kinda thing. Even though it showed in theaters all over the US, not everyone had access to it in their local area.

So if you missed it, keep checking their website to see if they’ll do another showing, if so, GO! If not, wait for the DVD to come out. You don’t even have to be a racer a racer to appreciate to appreciate this film.

2009 Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race

Posted by Joe Solancho On August - 11 - 2009

The Leadville 100 is set for this Saturday August 15th.  Back to attack is Lance Armstrong, who finished 2nd in 2008 to Dave Weins, 6 time winner of this race.  Lance fresh from his impressive return to the 2009 Tour de France is ready to give it another shot.  Per Velo News “Armstrong plans on smashing the Leadville 100 mountain bike race course record”.  Whether he does or not, it’ll be another epic race.  After seeing the 2008 video of Lance and Dave going head to head for most of the race I can’t wait to see this year’s race. So Cal local Manual Prado (3rd place in 2008) is also on the roster for Saturday.

Brief description of the course:

The course of 100 miles is within the beautiful, high altitude mountains and valleys of Leadville, Colorado. The race is an out-and-back course; 50 miles out to the highest point on the course, the Columbine Mine Aid Station at 12,600 feet.  The majority is on back-country dirt roads with some short sections of paved road. The entire course is above 9,000 ft with six well-supplied aid stations.

Check back next week for the results.  For more information, go to www.leadvilletrail100.com.  You can also watch via webcast through the official site (listed above) for $5.95.

Lance Armstrong, 2nd at the 2008 Leadville 100

Posted by Joe Solancho On August - 25 - 2008

The 7 time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, placed 2nd in one of the most grueling mountain bike race.  The Leadville 100 which took place earlier this month showcased a head to head battle between Armstrong and the 5 time Leadville 100 winner, Dave Weins.  (in 2007 Weins also took 1st place beating ex-Tour de France winner Floyd Landis)

I say grueling because this is a 100 mile race (50 miles out and back).  Brief description of the ride – the race starts at 10,200’, 90 percent dirt. There are steep climbs which becomes steep descents… There is a seven mile climb to the 50 mile marker at 12600 ft (approx 14,000 ft elevation gain).

main-1 by you.    Lance Armstrong on the heels of Dave Weins.

Click on this link where you can see pictures and video of the race.  You’ll see the head to head racing between Armstrong and Weins. Back and forth they battled for the lead.  One climb appeared steep for the two where they dismounted their bikes and walked up the hill.  On the last dirt run, Lance had no more and Dave Weins broke away finishing by two minutes.

Local racer Manuel Prado of Lake Forest took third place.

Finishing times for the top three were:

1. Dave Weins 6:45:45
2. Lance Armstrong 6:47:41
3. Manuel Prado 7:20:52

Look for Lance Armstrong to return in 2009!
