Bikes and Beer…does that put a bad name to mountain bikers

Posted by RL Policar On October - 15 - 2007

As you all know we do have a Brews Day category where our very own Lance Lowry goes into great detail to talk about the beer of the week. I love his articles because it’s always interesting and makes me want to try something new.

For as long as I could remember, mountain biking and beer have gone hand in hand. Heck my favorite beer is Fat Tire Ale…inspired by a bike riding beer brewing fella. Anyhow, I can’t help but wonder if people have this mental image of beer drinking mountain bikers. Some may assume that these beer drinkin’ athletes are big gutted, slow and unshaven.

But then again there’s people like Lance who leads the Brews Day articles…the dude has less than 10% body fat on him…and he’s fast, plus he doesn’t even have any facial hair. So maybe the generalization that people may associate with beer and mountain bikers are subject to the ones they’ve come across that like both.

Women who ride, are super cool

Posted by RL Policar On October - 8 - 2007

I’ve been blessed to have a wife that is a great rider. I would have posted a picture of her, but I don’t want anyone to fall in love and stuff. So I decided to borrow one from Loeka.

Anyhow, the title is totally true. As sad it is to say, women are the minority of the sport and anytime a female rider passes by most reactions seem to be something short of seeing a Unicorn. Most guys say, “Whoa, is that a chick? That’s cool!” Seeing a woman on the trail is as common as seeing a black guy on the trail…what you know you were thinking it!

So I’m guessing if you’re a single gal, the odds are in your favor. Think about it, the ratio is usually 1 gazzillion guys for 1 woman rider. So that means if you’re in my position where you wife or girl friend already rides, we’d better treat them right so we don’t do anything to lose them!

For the ladies that do ride, MtnBikeRiders salutes you! You go girl! Oh wait, that sounded WAY to gay. But ya, just keep riding!

Redline Mono 9 Pictures & NC

Posted by Jeremy Yang On October - 8 - 2007

Since our server went down a couple of weeks ago, we lost a few of our pictures. Sadly some of those pictures that were lost were of the new Redline Mono 9 (Oh, and Redline’s changed the name to the D460 29er for year 2008). To make up for it, I took a couple more this weekend when I finally got in some time to ride. One picture is of us taking a break, then a couple pictures of the Redline Mono 9. I really like this bike. Keep checking back as a review will be coming soon!

Lunch Break. Due to my wife hosting a baby shower, I got to go ride. But I didn’t get to choose the time, hence a lunch break.

Redline Mono 9, so pretty, so simple, so much FUN.

This shot makes me want to jump on the Mono9 and ride

Work has been really busy with October 15 being my full time job’s big deadline. After that though, I’m flying to Durham, North Carolina to visit family and hopefully hit up some local trails in the triangle. If you’re in the Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill area, this website: TriangleMTB.com, seems to be a very good resource.

I’d really like to do New Light but the whole “hunting season” thing scares me even if it’s OK to ride on Sundays. If not New Light then my location and the type of riding I’d like to do probably limits me to Beaver Dam. If anybody knows of other good intermediate trails near Durham that’s worth checking out, shoot me an email (jeremy at mtnbikeriders dot com).

Anybody in that area interested in acting as a guide or just want to get together and ride? Send me an email. I’ll be in Durham and will probably be able to ride on Thursday, Friday or Saturday morning. One or possibly two mornings if the wifie/schedule lets me.

One of our readers, Max B. sent me an email about some arm warmers he saw on Ebay. I ended up buying some, they’re about $10 with shipping and stuff. I went this this tatoo look. Kinda cool looking.

First Impressions: Skirtsports

Posted by Priscilla Policar On October - 5 - 2007

I mentioned earlier that Skirtsports sent me home with a skirt and jersey to review. I got the chance to break out the outfit on wednesday night with the girls. I got nothing but compliments from the girls on this outfit. Here are a couple of informal pictures:

Below is the Pink Crush Sleeveless Jersey and the Compression Fit BikeGirl Skirt.

Here’s a closer look:

Check out the reflective material on the zipper!

Initially nobody can deny that this is some cute stuff! Loved the colors, loved the materials and the detail put into these pieces. The fit is very flattering for all body types. I have to say I was really excited to ride in this set. The skirt and top were incredibly comfortable amd soft on the skin. The skirt also includes a mesh short with a pink chamois – nice touch!

You’ll have to check in later for my formal review. I don’t want to give away too much too soon but it will be good. I know my main concern was where does the skirt go when I am riding? Will it fly up? Will it get caught on my seat? And as cute as these clothes are, can they really hold up on the trails? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned for the formal review in a few weeks as I put these babies to the test! :D Here I come dirt!!!!!
