It was about three months ago when teammate Wes Castro shattered his hip during a practice DH run on one of the segments of the 2010 Winter Series. Since then our Team has been planning a fund raiser/raffle to assist with Wes’ medical bills. In conjunction with The Path bike shop (located in Tustin, CA) a BBQ & raffle was held at their retail store today at 1:00 pm.
Earlier in the morning we had a big group ride…and I mean BIG. Meeting at the Albertsons’ parking lot in the City of Orange were 40+ riders. This was a combination of members and friends of MtnBikeRiders.com, The Path and STR (SocalTrailRiders.org) – one BIG family within the mountain biking community. Through our ride, we made many stops to regroup. We had riders from of all skill levels but no one was left behind. We did a couple of loops within Santiago Oaks Park and Irvine Regional Park. The ride was a total blast!!!
Hi everyone, it’s official – Sunday May 23rd we’ll be hosting (with the gracious help of The Path Bike Shop) a group ride and BBQ. Funds raised will be going to help out Mtnbikerider Wes Castro as he recovers from a shattered hip. So far the progress has been good with Wes making significant strides in the past few weeks.
Raffle tickets & BBQ tickets (limited quantity!) are available at The Path Bike Shop. Also we’ll (mtnbikeriders.com) will be selling tickets at the California Golden State Series Races Woodward West Race April 24th-25th, and SRC Fontana Race May 15th-16. I’m (David) also available at the Fullerton Loop most Thursday nights, followed by Roscoe’s Deli. I’m also on STR, user name – dwsand3r.
Update 03-19-2010, We’re gonna have some gear generously donated by Crank Brothers & Fox Racing, so keep your eyes peeled for an update soon. Even I don’t know what the gear will be until the box show up! Also a fellow rider who owns a mobile automotive detailing business will be giving away a few auto details worth $150-200 depending on vehicle size! I’ll get some more info up this coming week.
Edit – David Sanderson,
So I originally sent RL my rough draft of the following flyer for an event we’re organizing for Wes, well thru some miscommunication it got posted, though I quickly removed it, the rumor mill began! So I’ve re-posted it, please be aware this is a rough-draft, not official yet, and we retain the right to modify the plan as necessary.
We plan to have the details set and begin selling tickets @ The Path Bike Shop, Mtnbikeriders.com and hopefully at upcoming SRC races if we can get permission. Note, the BBQ time has been pushed back to 1pm to allow the 8am shop ride time to return, and the Prizes will likely get even better by the final draft. Click on the photo to see in a larger size.
Rules & Regulations
Update! Thanks to some more than generous donations, we’ll be uppint our raffle revenue to prize ratio! We should be able to achieve or at least come very close to a 50/50 ratio. No official numbers yet as items are coming in, but I’ve got my fingers crossed and am aiming for 50/50.
As soon as it was announced that The Path Bike Shop group ride would be hitting Turnbull Canyon in Whittier, Tony and I were stoked. Located in Whittier, CA Turnbull Canyon is Tony and Kim’s home trail and serves as our Tuesday after-work ride. So to say we’re familiar with the trail would be an understatement.
The Path Crew Arrives
Kim, Tony and I were among the first to reach Turnbull Canyon and watched with anticipation as vehicle after vehicle arrived with bikes aboard and when all was said and done we had 18 riders for a Tour-de-Turnbull.
Beautiful weather and weeds as Kim leads Steve and Tony up a climb
It was an amazing day for a ride with the temperatures staying in the 70s and clear skies overhead. Maxwell and Brian W were representing The Path Bike shop and Maxwell’s friend Brian (didn’t catch his last name) served as ride lead and set up the ride plan. Up the fire road, 7th ave loop, down Rattlesnake, Cow Trail loop and finally descend A-side.
The Graffiti Tower
What a ride it turned out to be! With such a large group, usually there are several mechanicals and a diverse set of rider skills and abilities , leading to compromises on the route ridden. But today, everyone was of similar skill and ability and the only mechanicals were a derailleur adjustment and a broken chain. The chain even broke at a powerlink, meaning we didn’t have to pull out a chain breaker to fix it. All said and told, it was an amazing ride with grueling climbs for the XC crowd, jumps and tech lines for the all-mountain/free-riders and a great time for everyone.
Single-Track
Thanks goes out to Brian for setting up the ride, The Path Bike Shop in Tustin for hosting and sending Brian W and Maxwell. Oh, and watch out if you’re at The Path, for some reason I always end up buying a bike if Brian W is there, so be leery of him!
Check out the video I was able to capture with the Vholdr Contour HD 1080p camera and edit with Windows Movie Maker (because it’s free!). This past Sunday, Tony and I joined the crew from The Path Bike Shop on their group ride. With all the recent rains in Southern California, I’ve learned a lot about picking trails that don’t turn into mud fests. In particular, those trails of decomposed granite or shale seem to be the way to go as they filter water particularly well.
For this weeks ride 12 of us headed out to ride Trabuco to the Main Divide and back. Climbing Trabuco is a grueling and sometimes demoralizing climb. Due to recent rains, many stream crossings broke up the dredge of hike-a-bike sections and granny gear climbing. Robbi and a few other ‘fit’ people were able to haul A on the way up, whilst Tony and I slowly ascended on our all-mountain rigs. If I go back, I’ll definitely take my trail bike, if I’m gonna grind up-hill for about two hours, it’s gonna be on something below 30lbs!
Robbi Providing Trai Side Support
Several of us were bemoaning the climb when it was time to turn around and descend. What a difference 180 degrees makes! All those steep technical climbs were now merely fast and fun sections on the way down. Also thanks to the poor weather on Saturday, we mostly had the trail to ourselves for some high-speed action. I took chase after Robbi only to discover that yes, I’m still slow! By the time we reached the cars every rider was elated and happy to have made the trek uphill.
