REVIEW WEDNESDAY: TIMBER MOUNTAIN BIKE BELLS

THE BEST LITTLE TRAIL BELL EVER
THE BEST LITTLE TRAIL BELL EVER

TRAIL AWARENESS

Have you ever been on your local trails and you’re coming around a blind turn and suddenly you have hikers or horseback riders.
Both hikers, horseback rider, and you have your eyes bugging out of your heads like Large Marge from “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”.
Hopefully yelling doesn’t start from the hikers, horse riders. You’re fast on your feet with the apologies for the surprise you may have caused.

Being heard on the trail can be a hard thing when on a multi-purpose trail. You have to take into consideration that others are so into nature, enjoying the outdoors like yourself they could not be paying attention. We all share a responsibility while being on the trial.
So, don’t believe that because you’re on your bike and you can hear the noise you produce that it could be heard down trial as well.

With so many enjoying the local outdoors these days, the trails are getting a little more crowded.

Being heard before being seen is important and what mountain bike riders have done in the past was to get mini cow bells or small fishing bells from your local Big 5, then attaching them to their hydration packs or bikes. You may find that one rider that wants to be heard so much that they sound like Santa Claus and his sleigh.
Whistles are another good way to be heard, but trying to put one in your mouth as your riding is not an option when bouncing all over, I once saw a company that made water bottle air horns. Now these were cool, but talk about loud and scaring the crap out of someone, got to say they were pretty cool, but wouldn’t last long.
So, you have some quick choices out there, from the little fishing line bells you get from the local tackle store, to the small to medium Velcro mini cow bells you can order online, however there is a better choice.

THE BELL

In comes TIMBER Mountain bike bells and they have taken mountain bike bells a step above the rest.
I met Chris an Liz Lacy at Interbike one year just prior to releasing the BOLT ON bell. I saw this thing and right away had to talk to Chris from TIMBER about it.
So, I wondered how a bell could be better, it’s a bell! Big deal! WRONG!!

This is a big deal, why? TIMBER Mountain Bike Bells mount to your handle bars in one of two ways.
MtnBikeRider.com tested both bells with countless hours of riding in all conditions and areas to see trail users’ response and the response in a high public use area. The results were unbelievably great.

The first is the TIMBER Quick Release bell that comes with two rubber straps that allow you to mount to the narrow part of your bars or the wide part of your bars.
The second is the newest addition Bolt-On model that allows you to bolt-on to bars 31.8 to 22.2.

THE QUICK RELEASE BELL IS A SMALL PACKAGE WITH GREAT CONSTRUCTION.

PULL TAB O-RING ALLOWS YOU TO ATTACH TO YOU HANDLE BAR WITH NO PROBLEM AND THE RUBBER SHIM KEEPS YOUR QUICK RELEASE FROM UNWANTED SLIPPING.

Rubber shims included.
The Quick Release model has a partial nylon body and comes with two sized rubber rings for mounting.
Each ring has a tab to help you pull it onto the body’s hook. When you find the right spot the Quick Release bell holds great. Mounting is really super simple and what is great about this particular bell is it allows you to remove it and mount it on any of your bikes.
Let’s face it we never know which bike we want to take out for a ride in our quiver and being able to put this bell in your Hydro bag and pull it out at the ready is awesome.

THE BOLT ON TIMBER BELL AS YOU CAN SEE IS NICELY MADE. NYLON TOUGH BODY AND LEVER, BEAUTIFUL BELL, AND INCLUDED SHIMS FOR A GREAT FIT.

MOUNTING IS EASY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE ANY GRIPS, OR CONTROL SYSTEMS ON THE BARS. PULL IT OPEN A TAD AND SLIP IT ON.
MOUNTING IS EASY, YOU DON’T HAVE TO REMOVE ANY GRIPS, OR CONTROL SYSTEMS ON THE BARS. PULL IT OPEN A TAD AND SLIP IT ON.

The Bolt-On TIMBER Bell has a full body made with tough flexible nylon that tightens with a 5mm bolt. Use the proper shim, tighten it up on the handle bar and forget about it. You also don’t have to worry about the TIMBER Bell moving. Once it’s on, it’s on.
Now I do like this setup a tad better because I know it won’t be liberated by someone who thinks he deserves it more than me. It sucks while you’re in line ordering your Big Bear Yogi burger with Boo Boo fries after some hard riding only to come out and get your ride on and you see someone swiped something off your bike. Just not cool.

HOW IT WORKS

Now what has this beat over other bells, horns, and baby rattles is the fact that you can turn it on and off. Yes, this is the only mountain bike trail bell that allows you to use it when you want.
You don’t have to take you thumb off the handle bar to ring it or push a button to make it ring.
Sure using your thumb to flick a ringer or push a button may not sound like a big deal, but think of it this way. You flick the lever downward and the bell starts to ring.

This is what’s so ingeniously simple about the TIMBER Bell. You push the lever down and it will lower what TIMBER call the “internal Clapper Cable”, the ball will ring as you are moving.
After you pass those you wish to alert on the trail, simply use your thumb to move it to the up position and the bell is then turned off. EZZY PEEZZY!!

NOISE TIME!!!!

This is the other great thing about the TIMBER Bell. The noise it emits is very pleasing to the ear.
If you have ever used say one of the mini cow bells on your bike or on your hydro pack, you know this constant ringing is load and you will be heard a mile away, yes good and all, and I know this is what you want. At some point, I know you hate hearing this bell during your whole ride. It just kills your ride to the point of taking it off and tossing it in the pack to never be heard again, plus the noise has pretty much scared of all wild life within a 10 mile radius, and pissed off anyone around you.

SIMPLE TO USE AND A PASSIVE BELL SOUND WHEN YOU WANT IT.
SIMPLE TO USE AND A PASSIVE BELL SOUND WHEN YOU WANT IT.

TIMBER’s Bell sends out a nice (in their words) passive sound. It can be heard in a
200 + meter radius, which is great for all on the trail without waking the dead.

RIDE TEST

Using both the Quick Release and BLOT ON TIMBER Bells proved to never be any kind of issue when you needed to turn it on or off.
Of course, the Quick Release is easier to take on and off, this could be a plus to those with multiple rides.
Left or right side it worked well. I never experienced any movement when I used it. It didn’t slip when I pushed the lever up or down, thumb up there.
The Bolt On TIMBER Bell I like as you know due to not having to ever worry about it ever disappearing.
After you find the place where you want it on your bar (like the Quick Release close within thumb reach is best if you could) it was always a snap to operate.

ONCE YOU HAVE THAT GREAT SPOT, YOU'RE READY TO GO.
ONCE YOU HAVE THAT GREAT SPOT, YOU’RE READY TO GO.

I found that any time I would turn it on when I saw someone down trail, they had no problem hearing me coming. I even had one hiker thank me for not having an obnoxious sounding bell.
I don’t mind using it when I’m riding. I feel good about using it because it isn’t loud.
I wanted to see what kind of response I would have when riding the crowded boardwalk path at my local beach. Any time I turned it on, people would not be startled and move with no problem.

Just another plus using the TIMBER MOUNTAIN BIKE Bells. You can say this isn’t just for the trail.
No movement, super easy to install, fast to use on the trail without loss of control, and great construction.
Oh and one more thing, the Bolt On models threaded insert is made in the USA with a lifetime quality solid brass that won’t strip or wear out. Sounds good to me.
I have to tell you what the best part about the TIMBER Bell is, that’s the price.
These little babies will only set you back a whole whopping $20.00 bucks, yeah just $20.00 smack-A-Roos!!!

This is a super value if you ask me and I will be getting a few more for my other bikes as well.
Our hats off to TIMBER MOUNTAIN BIKE BELLS. Thank you for letting us review your products.

You can get one of these nifty bells by going to their website at mtbbell.com.

“SERENITY NOW, SERENITY NOW!!” STRESS GOTCHA DOWN

NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, CLOSE TO HOME OR SOMEWHERE FAR, GOING FOR A RIDE IS THE BEST MEDICINE.
NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, CLOSE TO HOME OR SOMEWHERE FAR, GOING FOR A RIDE IS THE BEST MEDICINE.

A RIDE TO MAKE THE MIND RIGHT

It’s been that long work week or a long day of work and the pressures of that boss, your bills, family matters, whatever it may be that’s weighing down on your shoulders to the point that you feel like you will never get that monkey off your back.
What do you do to get rid of that stress, drink? Eat? Maybe a little of both, but that may help for a minute (NOT) and it won’t give you clarity of the mind and body. What about getting on the bike you have in the garage or on the other side of your bed? That is if you sleep with her /him (“wink”).
Getting out on your bike and going on a long, heck even a short ride will do wonders for getting your prospective back. It makes you feel good about yourself, plus you know you’re getting some benefit from it too.
I myself like to go on a ride just by myself, no chit chat with others, just you, your bike, and the outdoors. Don’t get me wrong riding with a buddy or two is great too, but when you want to just get out and be in your thoughts of the world around you it’s kind of nice to be out there with just you.

WHEN YOU STOP, TAKE IT ALL IN, DON'T PASS WHAT'S ALL AROUND YOU BY.
WHEN YOU STOP, TAKE IT ALL IN, DON’T PASS WHAT’S ALL AROUND YOU BY.

THERAPY FOR THE MIND AND BODY

I will typically take my XC bike or my Enduro if I want to have a little bit of fun on the descents. Going on your DH bike would be a little much unless you like pushing the big beast for your therapy.
When you’re out there, wherever it may be its worth all the time in the world no matter the length of time you’re riding. I have friends that have their little trailer or their campers and they travel from spot to spot. I see their pics on Facebook and you just know it’s a daily dose of prospective and well being for the mind and body.
For most we may not have that luxury to get out like that, but maybe once in a great vacation. Just going to your local hills is always a great thing to do. My training backyard when I raced heavily in the day was Turnbull Canyon, just 10 minutes away (even closer when I lived down the street) was my go to therapy center to ride my problems away or just think things through.

"I CAN FIND ALL MY ANSWERS ON THE TRAIL, THERE THEY WILL ALL BE, ON THE TRAIL."
“I CAN FIND ALL MY ANSWERS ON THE TRAIL, THERE THEY WILL ALL BE, ON THE TRAIL.”

Now one may think, why ride those same old trails I know it like the back of my hand. Not true at all.
When I’m on my rides I will stop and find a place that might connect to me for some reason, something to look at or even feel at the time of the ride. You have to open yourself up to your surroundings and let it all permeate to your soul. Get off your bike and soak it all in to the core. Take off your gloves, helmet, and sunglasses. Quiet your mind and breath in deeply and feel, hear, and see everything around you.
For myself I will close my eyes because I want to feel things without my eyes, heightening my other senses.
Doing these exercises brings calm to my mind and soul. My body feels alive and awake. This will take time to master as we generally tune into only what we see and when we see more with our eyes it send those feeling to the other senses, clouding them. That’s why I say use all the senses you have first to find the calm, as you progress then close your eyes and only use your hearing touch and smell.
The clam you will feel will let you relax and feel better about yourself. You will feel that those pressures you have will feel less stressful and let you deal with them better.
You know like “SERENITY NOW, SERENITY NOW…”
As your riding, look at all your surroundings you will be surprised at what you miss by just riding a trail and not seeing where you ride. From animals, to the sounds around you, smells that carry from a distance that could give you a lunch or dinner idea for the day. You would be surprised.

THE RIDE BACK

Once you have found that center and you feel relaxed there is the ride back to the car or home, don’t start to dwell on the pressures you had going into the ride, stay focused on what you experienced on your ride and keep it close to your thoughts for as long as you can, why because it was what made you feel good about being there, made you realize that yes there are things to deal with on a daily basis.
You have given yourself the time needed to bring “YOU” time to yourself to see mentally you needed that time to refresh your mind and in doing so your body as well. Breathe in deeply and let it flow through you.
One last thing to do to keep the feeling alive in you during this time is to stop at say your favorite spot for a bite and your favorite libation. It’s that last me time as you tackle the next day with a fresh mind.
I love to do this as my last thing to do when I can.

GO AND HAVE A BIT E OR DRINK AT YOU FAVORITE PLACE. THIS JUST PUTS A NICE CAP ON A GREAT RIDE, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE STRESS IS GONE.
GO AND HAVE A BIT E OR DRINK AT YOU FAVORITE PLACE. THIS JUST PUTS A NICE CAP ON A GREAT RIDE, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE STRESS IS GONE.

YOU!! YOU!! YOU!!

Remember to go out and get that me time for yourself, this is what its all about when things might hit the wall for you. You’re not only exercising your senses, but freeing your minds soul and in the process not only exercising the body, but bringing in all that’s around you to help relax you in a whole.

Well if you try this I hope you feel better the next time you go out and need that prospective and relief from the everyday things that may weigh on our shoulders. Breath, feel, and open up you to the world around and relax.

“Time to ride!”

ITS A GREAT FEELING TO KNOW THAT AT THE END OF A RIDE YOU FEEL LESS STRESSFUL.

FINDING DEALS OF THE CENTURY

SUPER SHOE DEAL!!!
SUPER SHOE DEAL!!!

SO YOU WANT A DEAL

We all look for that ultimate deal; you know the one that’s too good to be true, hard to pass up, if you don’t get it the next guy will and you know that will just kill you.
Yeah you just have to get it, even if you know you have three more just like it you haven’t even touched yet that are brand new.
Being into cycling you just know when you see a good deal you just have to get it. No matter what it is, like a frame, parts, tires, clothing, the list could go on.
Where do you find this “deal of the century” one might ask? You could maybe find it online (may not be the best deal place), Craig’s List (now that’s always fun to deal with at times), a friend (which could be the best deal), or the best place is one of the big sporting goods stores that will have super clearance sales. Even your local bike shop could be the place of deals.
The big corporate bike shops could be a great place also to find that super deal.
Why the store you might ask, well stores will want to blow out goods to make room for new products coming in, so if you hit them at the right time like say end of the year you will find some super deals, especially from the big sporting goods stores and corporate bike shops.

When merchandise sits for too long this is lost profit when it’s old, the longer it sits the more it has to be marked down. Watch for these sale items. The other thing that’s important is styles of items. Riding clothing with bright colors, flashy bike parts, crazy colored bike frames. Some of these all kinds of items have a shelf life and if they don’t move fast a store has no choice but to get rid of thing by mark downs, then if they have them too long things go to the clearance racks, shelves, or online for cheap . The closer to the end of the year you get the better for you as the consumer.

SPOTTING THE DEAL

"$24.95, HECK YEAH I WANT THEM!!"
“$24.95, HECK YEAH I WANT THEM!!”

This can be an art in itself. How do you think good old mom was able to buy a whole year of school clothes for you and only spend $200 bucks or go to the market and get 10 baskets of groceries for only $60 buck, so who cares if you will never be able to eat 50 cans of Spotted Dick she saw on sale in the international aisle (this is kind of good by the way).

Let’s take these really cool Shimano MT33L SPD shoes. These were the ultimate deal when I found these on the clearance rack at a highly reputable sporting goods store that sells mountain bikes and some accessories. Now this wouldn’t be the prime place to go and get your next carbon XC, All Mountain, or DH rig, but when it comes to accessories you can score.
So here I am looking for some hiking boots when I come across these nice Shimano SPD shoes.
These are a normal kind of shoe that is good for trail riding or commuting. They are a great set of shoes from Shimano with that Shimano quality.

WHAT’S THE PRICE ALREADY!!!

OK, OK what did I pay for these little gems? How’s like $24.95 sound, yeah you heard me,
$24.95.
I was blown away, so much so I must have looked funny from a distance when you saw me poke my head up over the clearance rack to see if this wasn’t a set up or that I felt like I was ripping off the store or something. Not being satisfied that this was real I immediately set out to look for more to see if this was not a mistake. These particular shoes retail for $60.00 normally and $24.95 seemed just a little too good to be true.
While looking I did find another pair, “BUT WAIT”, the price on the other set was much higher, $48.99 dollars higher as a matter of fact.
Could it be someone made a huge mistake that I should bring to a staff members attention. Will I feel guilty if I buy them at this low price because of a mistake?
Naaaaahhh, it’s the clearance rack, there’s no mistake, it’s priced to move, old product that needs to be out of the system, gone for good!! SCORE! I need them for casual trail/commuting rides, yeah.

SEIZE THE MOMENT, NEVER LOOK BACK

SUPER DEALS MEAN MORE MONEY FOR AFTER RIDE TACOS!!
SUPER DEALS MEAN MORE MONEY FOR AFTER RIDE TACOS!!

See there you go, if you’re in the right place at the right time and you know when to hunt for bargains and deals, one should never hesitate.
End of the year sales, holiday sales, store anniversary sale, and just plain clearance sales are always the times to look.
Places like Craigslist, Pinkbike or other social media that offer a sales section could be a great place too. I got a great pair of Shimano M162 SPD (Msrp $150) for $40 and yes I needed them. If you recognize that the item that’s on sale is being sold at half off or lower, GET IT!!
Look at your friends that want to clear out that multitude of bike goodies they never used. This is a good place to look to (racer buddy’s that are sponsored, wink, wink).

You may not need another set of shoes, or part for your bike, heck even another bike for that fact, but if you know it’s too good a deal to pass up you can sure bet your butt the next guy will know and snatch it up fast.
Well good luck finding your deal and happy shopping.
