Used bike reviews: Scott Big Jon fat tire bicycle

One of my “hobbies” is also buying and selling bicycles. I don’t do it for profit but to experience the different bicycles that are out there in the wild. I also have an affinity for unusual bikes or brands just like the 2016 Scott Big Jon that you probably seen on the main page of the site.

I had always been fascinated with monster trucks and the fat tire bike is basically a version of that so when I saw a decent deal and went for it. I didn’t buy this bike to ride on the snow or to ride on sand; I did it for shits and giggles.

And boy does this bike make you giggle! The tires are ridiculously big a you are guaranteed to get a reaction from other riders. Kids think that the bike is cool, just like monster trucks!

The biggest misconception about this bike is that people expect it to be super heavy but I believe this bike came in at 32 lbs. I don’t really think that is bad at all. Here is another interesting tidbit, this bike can climb! The tires are really grippy so climbing is not an issue, some riders think that this bike is actually battery powered! I usually tell then that it does have a motor – a meat motor!

The other advantage of having such meaty tires is that the ride is quite comfortable although it takes a little time to get the tire pressures dialed in; too much air and you will be bouncing like a Pogo stick and too little air and you will be slow like molasses. Riding downhill is also a blast, it feels like that you have at least 3 inches of suspension. The only drawback of having the big tires is the steering, it is not as quick as a bike with “Regular” tires.

I am also thinking of using this bike for that elusive bike packing trip that I’ve been wanting to do, the bike definitely looks the part!

Getting a previously owned “fatty” is the way to go, although they are kind of hard to come by. This is a type of bike that everyone should experience for shits and giggles.
